Powys Action on the Climate Emergency (PACE) Hosted by PACE and Egin
Event Description
Light pollution destroys critical wildlife habitat - learn how it affects both plants and animals, such as migratory birds, bats, songbirds, insects and salmon. As the effects of light pollution are understood more, the list of plants and wildlife effected by it grows. It is not just animals, but humans too.
Another aspect of night light is the energy it uses, which adds up to a lot. We do need light to be safe at night, so how can we reduce light pollution and be safe?
For millennia our ancestors relied on their knowledge of the night sky to navigate, and the stars became characters in their stories, yet now many rarely, if at all, see the millions of stars that are in our sky.
We have speakers from Bannau Brycheiniog, Elan Valley, Presteigne & Norton Town Council, Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, and more. Here is a bit about the projects they represent ...
Bannau Brycheiniog
In 2012 Bannau Brycheiniog became the first place in Wales to be designated as an 'International Dark Sky Community' by DarkSky International. It was also only the fifth destination in the world (and the first in Wales) to be accredited.
Elan Valley
In 2015 Elan Valley Estate achieved International Dark Sky Park status and became the first privately owned but publicly accessible park in the world to do so.
Presteigne & Norton
Presteigne and Norton became the first community in Wales to be designated as an International Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International. Tackling the light pollution in this area was achieved through a unique collaboration between the community, Presteigne and Norton Town Council, Powys County Council, and Dark Source Lighting Design Studio. It was not just the centres of population, but the outer area of 40 square kilometers and a combined population of 2,700.
Powys
We'll hear a bit about the action Powys County Council has been taking, from their dark sky project engineer.
This is an exciting workshop that will open your eyes to the importance of light pollution, and may even leave you 'starry eyed'!
