Travelling further afield

If you are planning a longer trip, it is useful to look at this map of the carbon emissions of various types of transport. Travel can be a big carbon emitter, so it is an important area to seriously consider the carbon footprint of your plan.

Whilst longhaul flights don't look too bad, you travel a lot of miles, so on a longhaul flight this figure is multiplied many more times than the figure for a trip in a car would be. Flights are one of the biggest contributors to our carbon footprints, so try to avoid flying, or at least limiting it to one trip a year.

Can you replace your flights with a less polluting way to travel?

I like going abroad, what are my options?

If you are travelling to the continent, you will see that Eurostar has a very low carbon footprint. Train services are generally good in Europe, and often cost a lot less than in Britain. The Interrail pass allows European travellers to travel in up to 28 European Countries - read about it here.

You may think it is daunting to book a trip by train in Europe. This is where 'The Man in Seat 61' comes in. The site helps you to plan your route by train and buy tickets. It started off focussing on Europe, but now also covers train travel in Asia, Africa, America, and Australasia. You could even book a train from London to Japan or Singapore, travelling across Russia on the Trans-Siberian, Trans-Mongolian, Trans-Manchurian express'.

On this page there is a 'London this morning, Gibraltar tomorrow night, by train!' route. Then you can get the ferry to Morocco if you want to go further south.

On longer routes you can book a sleeper. These come in all kinds, from somewhere to lie, to a serviced room with fresh cotton sheets.

I just want to lie in the sun by a beach

European beaches are also accessible by train. For example, the Spanish resorts of Valencia and Alicante are accessible on high speed trains from Madrid, local transport can then transfer you to other nearby resorts. To see a map of the Spanish train network, visit this Rail Europe page and scroll down (note that this map does not include the Portugese train network).

You may have got the idea that there is a lot more achievable by train than maybe you thought. The Man in Seat 61 site is rich in information - you can find out about routes, booking and buying tickets, services for special needs, taking a wheelchair, car or bike with you, taking children, taking a dog or pet, taking a car by motorail, sleepers and couchettes, or buy a ferry ticket - and more!
