Summer Days in Powys

We all need a break! Whether a day out or a couple of nights away, Powys has it all. With the huge growth of glamping and camping options we can experience a little luxury whilst spending time appreciating nature. Many accommodation providers are choosing local or ethical suppliers eco toiletries as well as more sustainable building techniques in building cabins or renovating dilapidated buildings. Out of holiday breaks often attract lower nightly rates leaving you a little extra cash to support local shops and eateries which is highly encouraged to keep independent cafes and businesses afloat with the added bonus of you being able to travel a little lighter.

See agencies such as Visit Mid Wales, Homestay, Snaptrip, Coolstays, Kindred, Eco Bnb, Fair Bnb , Social Bnb, Canopy and Stars, Greener Camping, Nearly Wild Camping as well as market leaders, Air bnb, for lower-impact options for Wales and further afield.

Seaside days out…

The Cambrian Coast is served by trains to Aberdyfi onwards to Pwllheli. From Aberystwyth there are buses radiating from Pembrokeshire to Carmarthen. The Heart of Wales line runs from Shrewsbury to Swansea and now has special bike carrying carriages.

Both lines are very scenic in themselves and offer numerous destinations for day walking and cycling.

Walking days out…

·        The peaceful canal towpath can be walked from Newtown to Welshpool (12 miles) and return by train or bus, or vice versa. Use the canal safari app for nature observations and points of interest. https://www.montwt.co.uk/canal-safari

Nature Connection…

The Wildlife Trust websites are a brilliant place to discover conservation projects in your area. Whether you wish to take some time out away from the busyness of life for a little quiet time or attend one of their many events, the listings will give you some great choices. Events not only enable learning about wildlife’s needs and conservation strategies, many of these events are family friendly so you may share the experience with the next generation to encourage future land-stewardship. These wild spaces often have a place you can picnic and are a perfect opportunity to make new friends or even meet your neighbours! Check out their social media platforms too and stay in touch.

Volunteering may also be a way in which you can positively contribute to conservation efforts – organisations often have roles for all whether donning waterproofs and getting stuck in or helping from the comfort of your home with their marketing.

Active Travel…

See the multiple benefits of active and sustainable travel – keep fit whilst saving carbon release. What if we doubled the number of cycling journeys in the UK? We could save 1.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year as well as potentially saving the NHS £1 billion over 20 years. Public Transport…

Use it or loose it! Buses and trains can be a neat way of getting around; an opportunity to take in the views, read a book or even meet people. Public transport can keep you fitter and you’d be surprised at the extra steps you manage to clock up over the day. If booked well ahead train tickets, especially if purchased with a railcard, can be cheaper than driving when you bear in mind the increasing maintenance costs of running a vehicle plus fuel.
