Ways to make your autumn greener with Powys Green Guide

Opportunities for your Community to Repair, Reuse & Recycle and increase biodiversity this Autumn

Powys Community Councils have many opportunities to raise awareness and take action to increase biodiversity. Many are already doing great things such as allowing graveyards, verges and hedgerows to flourish with wildflowers for nature, putting up bird and mammal boxes, fitting renewable energy systems to community buildings. Powys Green Guide is the place to go for ideas and to see what excellent work local councils are doing. Click here to check out your community council.

Recycle more in your red box! Mixed paper-based containers can now be recycled through your weekly recycling collections by adding them to your red recycling box.

Sustainable Farming Scheme

Good news for small farms? In January 2026 the Welsh Government will be rolling out their flagship Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), which will replace the old area-based Basic Payment Scheme in Wales. LWA Cymru have been working hard to make the scheme more accessible to small-scale growers. Visit the Landworkers Alliance blog here.

Spotlight on.....

We are Wern Farm, a collective of three small market gardens in Sarn, Powys. We are collaborating to bring you a wide range of produce from our farm.

We care most about feeding local people healthy food that is grown in flourishing landscapes where people, plants and critters can survive and thrive. Creating a fairer, more resilient food system one farm at a time! Tilly is one of the farmers working near Newtown to test whether Powys land can be used to grow fruit and vegetables agroecologically on a commercial scale.

Between them they are working 36 acres of county council-owned land in Sarn. It will be used to supply produce to local markets, schools in Wales and possibly in future nearby cities such as Birmingham.

They are working collaboratively to provide a local veg box scheme, as well as developing individual enterprises.
