Autumn Woodlands and November Events

November brings shorter days and with daylight dwindling all the more reason for an early morning walk into one of Powys's beautiful ancient forests. Walking in woodland has been proven to lift our mood and promote memory with the aromas of pine after rainfall as well as aid sleep and vit. D production. Forests are actually carbon sinks - especially the ancient woodlands, plus winter time is perfect for tree-planting. Ancient woodland such as Carngafallt nr Rhayder, where lichens and bryophtyes cloak the woodland in shades of soothing green, make a perfect day out. Check out links to initiatives you can contribute to with a community group over at Powys Green Guide. Meet new people and be a positive force in helping nature!

Changing your default internet browser to Ecosia can even help plant more trees.
Check out The Woodland Trust or Radnorshire Wildlife Trust or Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust for more ideas.
What can you do right now to promote biodiversity? Speak with your Town or Community Council; they are required to complete a Section 6 Report every 3 years on how they are promoting biodiversity. Energy consumption is key. See our website for ideas.

Spotlight on.....
The Forest Smallholding
The Forest Smallholding resides at 1000ft elevation at the head of a quiet valley deep at Bleddfa in the Radnor Forest in Wales.
As well as being a working forest; there are large elements of ancient woodland and large swathes of deciduous broad-leaf trees, rocky outcrops and moorland.
The forest is alive with abundant wildlife and bird life including various finches, tits and warblers, Siskins, Bramblings, Dippers, Redpolls, Goshawks, Red kites and Ravens; peace and quiet abounds. Wild flowers thrive along with violets, primrose, cowslips, bluebells, snakeshead fritillary, and wild daffodils
It is here that we have set up home, where we raise our traditional breed of Jacob sheep, rare breed pigs, and free ranging hens providing Welsh hogget, mutton, pork and eggs for us and for sale. All our livestock is free range and is slowly matured: raised following organic principles and with a strong animal welfare model.
