Shopping with the planet in mind
Do you already buy sustainable and ethical brands whenever you can, but would like more opportunities to buy them - and more choice?
Thankyou! You are supporting businesses who are trying to support the environement and sending messages to manufacturers and growers that the things people want is changing.
Sustainable options are nudging their way into the mainstream, and when you buy them you support the change to 'sustainable' becoming the easy, normal, and usual choice for all of us. We all deserve quality items that are built to last, nature deserves items that can last (maybe in the hands of several owners), and at the end of their lives will safely break down for nature to do her magic.
The British Retail Consortium (BRC), in their guide for retailers states that the ideal end state is that the 'future of retail needs are fully net zero by 2040' and retailers need to shift the frame of choice for their customers, ensuring every basket is a ‘Net Zero basket’. Good news! However, consumers need to be vigilant about 'Greenwashing' - brands bigging up green aspects of their product, whilst distracting and playing down not so good facts about their supply chain and manufacturing. Also, 2040 is a long way off and scientists, backed up by the weather we have seen in the last couple of years, are pointing to a need to speed up our reduction of emissions through different choices, hopefully leading to a change in supply and industry practices.
Take a look at Ethical Consumer Magazine's article '10 ethical brands owned by unethical companies' - you will be surprised at some companies in this list ... Dorset Cereals ... Pukka teas ...
Read to the end for the summary 'Is it good or bad that vegan brands are being bought up by big business?'
This is a huge topic! We will be adding more artiicles and guides in this section.
We do highly recommend the Ethical Consumer website which is full of in-depth research on every aspect of consumption.
